While having dinner with Billy that evening, I receive a phone call from Ms. McTier. After our brief conversation, I hang up the phone and turn to Billy.

“They want me to come back tomorrow to meet with the doctor in charge of the HIV clinic. Can you believe this? I must have impressed them.”

He pulls me to him and says, “Yeah, I believe it. You sure as hell impress me!”

Early, the next morning, I arrive at MCG. As I walk towards the west wing, I see Rita. She’s standing in the hallway talking to one of the doctors. She seems upset, and the doctor is visibly angry as he shoves an armful of folders at her. When the doctor walks away, I approach Rita and ask, “What was that all about? He looks like a raving idiot.”

“Nothing, really. Some of these doctors around here think their shit don’t stink. I’ve dealt with worse.” With a change in tone of voice, she adds, “And hey, I did some investigating on the job you’re applying for. Evidently, it’s between you and some guy from Texas. But they still want to fill the position as soon as possible.”

“Like how soon?” I ask.

“They want to fill this job in about two weeks. Three weeks would be pushing it. The guy from Texas is in college. He can’t take the job any sooner than 2 months. So, after your interview with Dr. Cox—he’s the physician in charge of the HIV clinic, I think they’ll offer you the position.”

“Rita, I can’t to this. Two weeks. I have an apartment in Terre Haute with my sister, Darla, a job—however mediocre it is, and other commitments. How could they possibly expect me to start work in two weeks?”

“I’m only telling you this so you can get yourself prepared. If you really want the job, then tell them. If you have to move that quickly, you can do it. Just trust your instincts. I’ve got to go now. Think about it.” Rita squeezes my hand and turns to leave.

I’m left standing there in the middle of a busy hall with my thoughts. By the time I find the west wing where Ms. McTier’s office is located, my mind is going in 50 directions. I should have prepared myself for this. What was I thinking?: that they’d let me finish graduate school, then offer me some great job. I must be the most naive person on the planet.

I walk into the office and straight up to Ms. McTier’s desk.

“Hello, again, Judy. Nice to see you.”

Judy smiles but her thoughts are obviously on more pressing matters. She shuffles papers, hurriedly. Still, she’s professional and courteous.

“I’m happy you could come today. I’d like you to meet Dr. Cox. He’s has just moved here from Oregon and has extensive experience working with HIV patients. Just for your own information, Dr. Cox has been at Oregon State Hospital for the past 5 years. His credentials are impeccable.”

Judy gets up and motions for me to follow her.
